client: Stadtmuseum Kassel
The proposal aims to concentrate the new extension of the museum into one single volume sitting at roof level. This would restore the original profile of the building by removing the 1950’s roof and replacing it with a parapet - providing a new vantage point over the city. This floor would house the administrative areas, forum and bar space behind a veil of distinctive gold mesh cladding which crowns the building and provides solar control.
On entering the museum visitors would have the option of either proceeding straight to the temporary exhibition space or towards the grand staircase. The lifts situated adjacent to the staircase would provide further access to all floors. The principal exhibition areas would be restored to their original proportions and are designed to have a flexible layout. A lightwell allows views down into the foyer and helps to orientate the visitor.
