This Primary school incorporates two Special Needs Schools with pupils from mainstream and SEN groups sharing lessons and spaces in as many ways as possible. This arrangement was made possible through extensive consultation with all three schools and an understanding of the requirements of each group.
Originally two of those schools occupied the site leaving only a margin along the street edge with sufficient space and access for the new building. A Masterplan was developed which proposed building along this edge in two phases to allow for the decant and demolition of each school in turn, and to allow the schools to remain in operation throughout.
The edge of the site offered an opportunity to make a clear urban statement in what had become a fragmented part of Tottenham. The new building defines the street edge, with clear points of entry and visibility of areas which have a partly public function. But it also makes a protective line for the pupils and the open spaces on its north side.
The development links to the Broadwater Farm Children’s Centre, also by GLA, which received a RIBA award in 2007.
