client: London Borough of Hackney
New Horizon School will serve 150 pupils with special educational needs. It replaces the existing school on a site between Edwardian and Victorian terraces in Stoke Newington.
The new building will have a zigzagging structure that divides the site into two play spaces with landscaped sensory gardens and trees. White brickwork and perforated aluminium panels are the main materials of the two storey structure. The building will be largely naturally ventilated and will use a combination of methods to achieve a very good BREEAM rating - photovoltaic panels, air source heat pumps and night-time cooling.
