client: London Borough of Hackney
Horizon/Downsview School will serve 150 pupils of all ages with Special Educational Needs (ASD & SLD). It replaces the existing school on a site between Edwardian and Victorian terraces in Stoke Newington.
The new building has a zigzagging structure that divides the site into two play spaces with landscaped sensory gardens and trees. White brickwork and perforated aluminium panels are the main materials of the two storey structure. The building will be largely naturally ventilated and will use a combination of methods to achieve a very good BREEAM rating - photovoltaic panels, air source heat pumps and night-time cooling.
D&B Contractor: McLaren Construction. Structural Engineer: Mouchel Structures, Services Engineer: Max Fordham, QS: Cyril Sweett.
