The Highcross Development is a mixed-use urban regeneration scheme which combines a rejuvenated and extended Shires Shopping Centre with a new John Lewis store, restaurants, cinema, streets and public spaces. GLA were one of three architectural practice’s appointed to develop sections of the Highcross scheme within the Chapman Taylor Masterplan.
GLA designed three elements: the Landscaped Public Realm which includes two key spaces - St. Peter’s Square and the Old Grammar School Court, a Residential Building flanking the car park, and the Multi-Storey Car Park itself.
Landscaped Public Realm
The landscaping is designed to not only complement the surrounding buildings but to also function as visually legible, uncluttered and robustly detailed. This is created using subtle variations in materials and treatment.
The notion of connectivity is achieved using granite paving in main pedestrian areas with contrasting ‘runners’ inset as directional elements. Inset strip lighting amplifies movement and transforms the spaces at night. The landscaping is completed with simple furniture and strategic planting which uses screens and groupings of pleached and shaped trees.
Structural Engineer: Waterman, Services Engineer: WSP, Transport Engineer: WBC, QS: Cyril Sweett.
